The Rep’s 49th season continues October 14 – November 8 with Patrick Hamilton’s psychological thriller, Angel Street. You may already be familiar with the story of this play—it was made into a film in 1944 starring Ingrid Bergman, which was released under the play’s original title, Gaslight.
The psychological aspect of this play is so interesting that it actually coined the term “gaslighting.” Used regularly since the 1960s, “gaslighting” has come to refer to a form of sophisticated psychological manipulation in which aggressors slowly drive their victims insane by causing them to question their very sanity. It’s scary to think that a person could control another in this way, and the relationship we see on stage gives us an insider’s view of the damage that can be done.
