M. Butterfly
By David Henry Hwang
Directed by Edward Stern
1992-1993 Mainstage Season
The Story
This exotic tale of a French diplomat’s obsession with a delicate and beguiling Peking Opera performer would be unbelievable were it not drawn from a real event. Was the diplomat incedibly naive or helplessly lost in his own romantic fantasy? The Western perception of Eastern culture provides the perfect opportunity for espionage in this bizarre retelling of Madame Butterfly.
