POSITION OVERVIEW

The Repertory Theatre of Saint Louis is seeking a qualified Assistant Technical Director to join our production staff. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with the Technical Director and other departments to ensure the successful execution of technical elements for all productions. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background and proficiency in CAD software. The Assistant Technical Director will play a key role in overseeing the Scene Shop during the build and load-in phases, as well as maintaining the shops and ensuring they meet the highest standards of safety and functionality.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Technical Drawings: Create technical drawings based on designer sketches and plans. Ensure all drawings meet the needs of the production while adhering to safety standards and budget constraints.
  • Supervision: Assist the Technical Director in supervising the Scene Shop throughout the build and load-in process. Provide support and direction to crew members as necessary.
  • Shop Maintenance: Help maintain and organize the Scene Shop, ensuring tools, equipment, and supplies are in good condition and stored properly.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with the Technical Director, designers, and other production staff to ensure seamless communication and coordination between departments.
  • Automation (if applicable): Experience or willingness to work with automation systems would be a plus, supporting advanced technical elements in productions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience: 1-3 years of experience working in regional theatre or a similar technical theatre environment.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD and Vectorworks for creating technical drawings. Strong knowledge of both wood and metal construction techniques.
  • Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work well in a team and support crew members effectively.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to anticipate and resolve technical challenges that arise during the production process.
  • Sense of Humor: A positive attitude and sense of humor, contributing to a collaborative and enjoyable work environment.
  • Preferred (but not required): Experience with automation systems and a background in larger-scale productions is a plus. 
  • Vehicles: Must have experience & be comfortable operating large box trucks in various conditions. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and handle heavy technical equipment.
  • Comfortable working in various physical environments including construction spaces, backstage areas, and at heights.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed during technical rehearsals and production builds
